Birth of a Smurf

Chapter 5: Change

"You can't win for losing, and you can't lose to win."  This is an old sasying that smurfs back many many moons ago.  Yet instead of being smurfy to one of our own, all we did was push him away.  Narrator Smurf rubbed his hands together.  "So what happens now, Papa?" he asks.
"I'm open to suggestions as to what we should do in light of the stork problem." Papa Smurf said.
"We need to find out if the humans really have smurfed the storks to help them." Gutsy Smurf suggests.
"You need to find Shadow Smurf and apologize, Gutsy." Sassette said.  "It may not have looked like it, but Shadow was trying to change.  Maybe he doesn't want to be a Shadow Smurf anymore..."
"I never really thought of that, Sassette." Gutsy Smurf admits.  "But can a Smurf like him really change?"
"If Smurfette and I can change from bad to good, then so can Shadow."
"Got any ideas on where to look?" Brainy Smurf asked Sassette.
"No..." Sassette answered.
"Then that's out of the question."
"Or we could call him." Smurfette suggests.
"My phone desn't get long distance." Gutsy Smurf jokes.

"That's not how you call him, Shadow is called by tune." Harmony Smurf said.
"Well, tell Gutsy the tune so he can apologize to Shadow." Sassette said.
"I'm not going to apologize to one who smurfs murder, even willing murder." Gutsy Smurf said.
Sassette was now irate.  "I guess you have the guts to stand up for your beliefs, but you don't have the guts to admit you were wrong?  You really don't have that much guts, Gutsy." and Sassette ran off crying.
Gutsy Smurf sighed.  "Do I sound unsmurfy with the way I feel?"
"In a way, yes and no." Alchemist Smurf answered.  "It's tough to admit you're wrong, but feeling that Shadow is a stork smurfer is something we all believed..."
"Until we found out that it was asking for Shadow to smurf it, yet he wanted to get help." Brainy Smurf said in defeat.
"I don't blame you, Brainy.  We all have our reasons for how we believe Shadow was acting." Gutsy Smurf said.

Meanwhile, Papa Smurf was busy with his magic spells.  "I just don't know what to do now, but I will keep trying." Papa Smurf said.
"What exactly are you doing, Papa?" Narrator Smurf asked.
"Thanks to Miner Smurf, I managed to smurf and concoct a vaccine for these parasites that are harming our precious storks."
"Does it work?"
"No yet, it only make the eggs of the parasites smurf faster."
"What do you make of this Shadow Smurf, Papa?"
"I don't know what of think of him.  But I do know have amends to smurf with Shadow, if I get the chance."

Smurfette was looking at herself in the mirror, comb in hand.  "No, my hair doesn't need a run through..." she tells herself.
Suddenly, three raps are heard at her door.  Smurfette goes to answer it, and on its opening, Sassette is standing there crying.  "Oh, you poor thing.  Come on in and smurf it all out."
"Thanks you, Smurfette." Sassette says with a hiccup as she rubs her teary face.
While the girls have their talk, Super Drive was fixing up his racecar.  I just don't get it, What is this Shadow Smurf's deal? he thought.  This Shadow Smurf comes off as a real jerk, but he has a sense of... valor.  Not to mention the singing, intuition, and the need to be smurfy at times.  He crawls out from under his racecar, "I don't get it, Shadow Smurf shouldn't be acting like this." Super Drive says to the wind.
"Really now?  I'd like to know more." a voice says.
Super Drive turns to see Reporter Smurf.  "And you are..."
"Reporter Smurf's the name, controversy and headlines are m'game."
"O-kay..."
"Super Drive, is it?"
"It is."
"Tell me, none of us Smurfs in the village even smurfed a Shadow Smurf, but you know much about him.  So I wanna know what you know and give me every smurfy detail you can." Reporter Smurf says with is pencil and notepad ready.
"You really want to know everything?" asked Super Drive.
"If it's about Shadow Smurf, then spill the smurf beans.  I mean, I would ask the others, including Papa, but you seem to be the only source I have."
"All right, but this may take a while..."
Reporter Smurf changed his notepad to a slightly wider and thicker notepad.  "I'm all ears."

*

By day's end, Reporter Smurf had all he needed from Super Drive about Shadow Smurf and began composing his story.  The next morning, this story and some other stories were in the paper, the Smurf Village Voice and Editor Smurf passed them out personally.  "Extra! Extra! Smurf all about it! 'Stork numbers falling: Will Smurftinction be The End?'  'Traveler Smurf and the Pink Colored Berries.'  'Wooly Smurf's Secret to Making Smurfy Clothes.'  Get it while it's hot!" Editor Smurf yelled out in textbook paperboy style.
Everyone grabbed the paper and read every article except the one Super Drive did in regards to Shadow Smurf... what a waste.  However, it makes sense, because everyone has so much to smurf at the moment.  A bit later, Sassette paid a visit to Harmony Smurf.  "Sassette, it's good to see you in a smurfy mood." Harmony Smurf greets.  "What can I smurf you for?"
"I need help in making a smurf change for the smurfier." Sassette answered.
"Grouchy won't change for the smurfier, Sassette, as he will always hate something."
"I want to help change another for the smurfier... Shadow Smurf."
Harmony Smurf went quiet.  The two exchanged glares for thirty seconds before breaking the silence.  "Well, if you're truly serious in trying to smurf Shadow smurfier, then let's start with a musical instrument."  Harmony Smurf hands Sassette a black flute.  "Give this to him and good luck."
"Thanks, Harmony." Sassette takes the flute and runs off
I guess I should smurf in her footsteps on this issue. Harmony Smurf thought.

Sassette went off into the part of the village where she could have her alone time and began testing the flute.  The problem was, when she would blow into it, the black flute made very odd noises.
"Thanks for smurfing the obvious, Narrator." Sassette said.
"Sorry." Narrator Smurf said as he approaches Sassette.
"I wonder what's wrong with this thing?" and Sassette blows into the black flute, but the sound was still odd.
"Did Harmony tune that flute properly?" asked Narrator Smurf.
"Yeah." Sassette answered, and then blew into the flute again, only harder this time.
The result of the hard blow had a rolled up piece of paper come out of it.  That explained a lot.  Sassette unrolled the piece of paper.  "These aren't the notes that I remember." Sassette said.
Narrator Smurf took a look at the paper.  "And it's time for me to go.  Catch you later, Sassette." he said.
Sassette was confused, but watched Narrator Smurf run off.  She then pulled out her own p;ink flute and played the notes on the paper.  The first few times were wrong, but after six attempts, Sassette finally got the hang of it and correctly played the tune on the seventh time.

It was at this moment when she saw the summoning circle form on the ground and Shadow Smurf soon appeared, rising up from the circle.  "So this is how to call you..." Sassette trailed off.
"It is," Shadow Smurf explained, "and you best not abuse it, Sassette."
"Anyway, I want to ask you stuff.  For example-"
"Has anyone smurfed the bucket?" Shadow Smurf asked.
"Well, no." Sassette answered
"Then off I go, Sassette."
"Wait, I have a gift for you."
"A gift..." Shadow Smurf trailed off.  Sassette then handed him the black flute.  "Well, at least it's the right color."
"You don't have to be all unsmurfy, Shadow." Sassette explained.  "You can change and be a good Smurf, you know."
"Trying to smurf the good in me, Sassette?  Cute, but that part of me has been gone for a long time."
"Shadow..."
"How about this..." Shadow Smurf, with flute in his left hand, ignites the black flute.  Sassette saw as the black blute was covered in blue flames, but this was only temporary, as the flames soon died out and the flute was undamaged.  "So it doesn't go to waste, use this flute to call me when someone smurfs the bucket."
"Won't you saty for a little longer?" asked Sassette.  "At least for some smurfberry bread?"
"Hmm... Sassette truly smurfs that she can bring out the good in me, but she is wrong.  However, that smurfberry bread is pretty good. Fine, it couldn't hurt to have a bit more smurfberry bread before I leave."
"Great."

Sassette and Shadow Smurf went to Baker Smurf, and luckily for them, they managed to smurf the last loaf of smurfberry bread.  The two sat together and split the loaf, eating quietly like it was nothing at all.  The other Smurfs in the village managed to go about their busy lives, but on a walk to regain his thoughts, Papa Smurf managed to see the two eating together.  Curious, he stood there and watched the two as they ate, yet he couldn't figure what to do.  Part of him was worried and another part of him wanted to smile.  Harmony Smurf managed to pass Papa Smurf and saw the very same thing, shocked aqt the smurfiness of the scene.  "It's working, it's actually working." he said to himself.
Papa Smurf broke away from the scene.  "What's working?" he asks.
"Sassette mentioned how she wanted to change Shadow for the smurfier not too long ago, and now look at them, eating like there isn't a care in the world."
"I'm not getting too old to see this." Papa Smurf said.
"Maybe she can smurf Shadow on the smurfier side of the blue."
That would be smurfy. Papa Smurf thought.
With this in mind, Papa and Harmony Smurf part their ways, leaving Sassette and Shadow Smurf to themselves.

I guess Shadow likes smurfberry bread. Sassette thought as she ate.  He seems content, so it's a good start.
Perhaps, I can get Baker to make me another loaf... Shadow Smurf thought.  I might get lucky, so let's see what smurfs here in the village.  I may just take a soul with me before I go...
The calm mood was interrupted by Blanco Smurf, who had approached the two.  He was holding a lilypad like a sun umbrella.  "I need to know, why did the stork want you to smurf its soul away." he said, nervously.
Shadow Smurf gazed at Blanco Smurf.  "Because it is my job." he answered.
Crazy Smurf approached the three.  "Having a walk out today, Blanco?" he asked.
"Yeah, trying to get some sun, but not too much." Blanco Smurf answered.
"I take it the sun hurts you." Shadow Smurf asks.
"Well, let's just smurf that the sun isn't kind to me like it is to the others."
"Blanco burns easily in sunlight, so he can't stay outside for very long." Sassette explains.
"Is that really the reason why, because it told you to?" asked Blanco Smurf.
"Yes." Shadow Smurf answered.
"Please tell me they will be fine.  Please, Shadow, I need to hear it."
"O-kay, I better take you back to your mushroom, bud, before you get too irritated." Crazy Smurf said, trying to change the subject.
Blanco Smurf sighed.  "I guess you're right, Crazy.  Shall we?"
"Sure."
"Hold on a minute." Shadow Smurf asked.  "There's something about you two that smurf my interests."
"Well, we're really good friends." Crazy Smurf explains.
"That's right." Blanco Smurf agrees.
Shadow Smurf stands up, "Are you two smurfing each other?" he asks.

Sassette covered her ears, while Blanco and Crazy Smurf were stunned by Shadow Smurf's question.  Shadow Smurf continues.  "I don't mean to sound rude on the matter, I just get that vibe between you two, so I figured that I would ask."  Blanco and Crazy Smurf don't answer.  "I mean, if you guys are, I'm not bothered by the fact if you two are.  More power to you and whatnot if you are, but if not, that's fine, too.  Togetherness is something you Smurfs should have, smurfy feelings and whatnot."
Crazy and Blanco Smurf keep silent on the matter.  "Are you three done yet?" asks Sassette.
Shadow Smurf nods.  "I think this is all of the Q & Smurf for today." he answers.
Meanwhile, Handy Smurf continued working on a radio transmitter, but all that came across the channels was white noise.  "Come on, smurf for daddy." he says.
"Working hard as usual, Handy?" Papa Smurf asks as he walks by.
"On a very important thing." Handy Smurf explains.  "Thanks to a bit of copper wire and other metals that were put to use by Smithy Smurf, I managed to smurf this radio receiver.  Hefty and Gutsy managed to smurf points around the village and now it's all up to me."
"Oh?" Papa Smurf was interested in this.

"If the humans have the other storks, this devices should use radio waves and it'll let us know how they are doing."
"What a bluetiful idea and invention, Handy.  I'm sure every smurf in the village will benefit from this, and you'll be praised fur such smurfy intentions."
Handy Smurf rubs the back of his head.  "Heh heh, I am only doing my part, Papa, so there's no need for praises."
"Perhaps I can find a spell too..."
"No spells, this should be hand-made.  To, uh, give it that rustic feel..."
"Very well then.  Keep up the bluetiful work, Handy." and Papa Smurf walks away.
Papa Smurf, I will not fail you, but thanks for being proud of me. Handy Smurf thought.
Papa Smurf continued his thoughts while he walked.  Very good, Handy, you passed my test.  There is no such spell made for this endeavor, so you have the best of luck.

*

Later on in the day, Handy Smurf had succeeded in listening to radio waves.  He only managed to get three channels, and since one of them was news, he thought of it as a victory and broadast the audio around the village.  "I don't see what's so smurfy about three channels." Grouchy Smurf snorts.
"These channels are our link to the human world." Handy Smurf explained.  "We have music, news, and something else that isn't snow."
Reporter Smurf felt sad.  "News, huh?  I guess that means I'm out of a job..." he says while hanging his head down.
"Not really, you now have a reliable source to back up your craft."
"I never saw it that way, thanks Handy."
"Well, I've smurfed enough news for one day, let's have some music." Grouchy Smurf voted.
"Yeah, music." Other Smurfs chanted.
"No way, I want more news to learn about the storks Brainy Smurf said.
"Majority rules for music, so music it is." Handy Smurf said and turned the dials as the others cheered.
Sassette and Shadow Smurf join the massing Smurfs and soon saw them dancing to the sound of musi over the radio.  "So Smurf Village now has radio?" Shadow Smurf.
"What is radio?" Sassette asked.
"A series of waves that emit various things, from music to information." Brainy Smurf explained.
"This is nice music, though." Sassette said.
Smurfette gives Handy Smurf a well deserved kiss on the cheek.  "We're all very proud and thankful for your hard work, Handy.  Good job." she expresses her gratitude.
"It was nothing, Smurfette, but thanks." Handy said while rubbing his newly kissed cheek.
'We interrupt this music broadcast for a special buletin...' was announced over the radio, making all the Smurfs who were daning stop.
Good, some news omes after all. thought a content Brainy Smurf.

'Zoologists around the world have been baffled by the sharp decline in stork population and with proper numbering, have disovered so few left.  Of these remaining few, six of them were found alive and brought to zoos for immediate conservation, mall of which were ill upon arrival.  Two of these storks died in the care of humans, but we found the parasites ausing them such a sad demise.  But thanks to this demise were we able to create medicines given to the remaining four storks.  The good new is that in spite of this medicine being experimental, these four birds are in stable conditioning.  Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN has reason to believe and announced that the Stork is classified globally as EW.'
The Smurfs turn to Brainy Smurf. "EW means 'Extinct in the Wild'." he sadly explains.
'Hold on, I'm being told now that one of the four remaining storks, a male has just died.  Sadly, now there are only two males and one female stork left in the world, and zoologists are doing all they can to save these last three birds.  The newly deceased stork will be buried within the hour... and we will keep you up to date on Stork Watch as this story develops.'

Sassette turned to Shadow Smurf.  "You're leaving?" she asked.
"It is my job, after all." Shadow Smurf answered.
"Papa, a word in private." Narrator Smurf whispered to Papa Smurf.
Papa and Narrator Smurf have a private word.  "If the Female stork smurfs the bucket before laying eggs, that's it." Narrator Smurf whispers.
"This is bad indeed, Narrator.  And sadly, there's nothing I can do but pray for the best..." Papa Smurf whispers.
"I guess we can try again later." Sassette said.
"Sassette, you truly are a kind soul... The next time I return to this village, only sorrow will follow." Shadow Smurf said.  A summon circle was placed nearby and Shadow stepped into it, and within moments, lowered into it and he was gone.

The evening that followed wasn't a smurfy one as for the first time in a long time, the village was quiet.  No one said anything, not during the evening, not during dinner, not even before bed.  It was quiet until and during bedtime... but Papa Smurf wasn't asleep.  He sat there in his mushroom staring at Shadow Smurf's scythe.  As long as I don't give this back to Shadow, I feel the village will be safe. he thought.  Sassette managed to show a good Shadow, but that time is over.  Eventually, Shadow will come to do his job, and no one in the village is prepared for it.
Papa... do what you can for us, because nwe will need your guidance now more than we ever did before...
it's been a bit since I've posted this chapter.  no matter, here's the next installment.  again, I give thanks to *Shini-Smurf for using Blanco.  and the question asked about him is something only she would know.

Don't worry, I'll be getting more for you for good measure. Also I could easily look up official sources but I'm too lazy for the time being. I might, though, it depends. At this point I wonder if an official source or wiki stating it will actually get it through to you though.
